The operator publishes one timetable for the whole year: there is no separate summer and winter schedule (source). What does change through the year is the timing of the prayer pauses, explained below.

Why the hours are different from a museum

For most of the 20th century this building was the Kariye Museum, and it kept museum hours. That changed when it was reconverted to a mosque in August 2020. After a four-year restoration it reopened on 6 May 2024 as Kariye Mosque (source).

Today the building serves two groups. Worshippers come for the five daily prayers. Visitors come for the mosaics and frescoes and follow a set route with a ticket. The timetable is built so the two do not overlap. That is the reason for both the weekly closed day and the short pauses during the day.

The weekly closed day

Tourist visits do not take place on Friday. Fridays: worship only, no tourist visits.

This catches many travellers out, because many Istanbul museums close on a different day or not at all. If your trip is short, fix the day for Chora Church (Kariye Mosque) first and arrange the rest of your plan around it. The days open to visitors are Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

How prayer-time pauses work

Tourist entry stops about 15–30 minutes before each prayer time and resumes after prayers.

In practice it goes like this.

  1. Before the prayer. Staff stop admitting new visitors and ask those inside to make their way out. The operator states that visitors must leave ahead of each prayer and that no one is admitted while it is under way (source).
  2. During the prayer. The building is used for worship only. You wait outside in the garden.
  3. After the prayer. Entry resumes and the visitor route opens again.

Prayer times are set by the position of the sun, so they are not fixed clock times. They move by a minute or two each day. Across the seasons the shift is large: the midday and afternoon prayers fall later in summer and earlier in winter. That is why we do not print a fixed list of pause times here. Look up the Istanbul prayer times for your date on the morning you go.

Within tourist hours you will usually meet the midday prayer and the afternoon prayer. In the darker months the sunset prayer can also fall before closing time, which shortens the useful part of the late afternoon.

Best time to go

  • First choice: at opening. Arrive at the start of tourist hours. The narthexes are narrow, and a few tour groups are enough to fill them. Early on you can stand under the domes without being moved along, and there is a long stretch before the midday prayer.
  • Second choice: mid-afternoon. The gap between the midday and afternoon prayers is the next calm window. Check the times first so you do not arrive just as entry stops.
  • Avoid: just before a prayer. If you reach the gate shortly before a pause you will wait outside until it ends.
  • Avoid: the last minutes of the day. Last entry is at 17:55, but that leaves you almost no time inside. A visit takes about 60 minutes, so count back from closing time.
  • Prefer a weekday. Weekends tend to draw more visitors, local and foreign alike.

Light matters too. The mosaics sit in vaults and domes and are lit partly by daylight from the windows. On a bright morning the gold backgrounds of the inner narthex, where the life of the Virgin unfolds across three bays (source), are easier to read than late on a winter afternoon.

Before you set out

  • Buy or book your ticket. Foreign visitors pay €20 at the gate. You can also book ahead on our tickets page and arrive with a QR code on your phone.
  • Dress for a mosque. Shoulders and legs covered; headscarf for women inside the prayer hall.
  • Allow travel time. The site is in Edirnekapı, Fatih, Istanbul, some way from Sultanahmet and Taksim. Routes are on how to get there.
  • Use a pause well. If you do get caught by a prayer pause, the land walls and other monuments of the district are a short walk away. See nearby sights.

What is open on the visitor route

During tourist hours you can see the outer narthex, the inner narthex and the parekklesion, the frescoed side chapel with the Anastasis in its apse (source). The mosaics in the central prayer hall are covered, as that space is reserved for worship (source).

To make the most of the time you have, read the mosaics and frescoes guide before you go, or start from the main Chora Church (Kariye Mosque) visitor guide.

Frequently asked questions

What are the Chora Church opening hours?

Tourist visits run 09:00–18:00 on Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Last entry is at 17:55. The same hours apply in summer and winter.

Is Chora Church open on Friday?

Not for tourists. Fridays: worship only, no tourist visits. Plan your visit for one of the other days of the week.

Is Kariye Mosque open during prayer times?

It is open for worship, but not for sightseeing. Tourist entry stops about 15–30 minutes before each prayer time and resumes after prayers. If you are already inside, staff will ask you to leave before the prayer begins.

What are the Kariye Mosque prayer times?

Prayer times follow the sun, so they change a little every day and a lot between summer and winter. Check the published Istanbul prayer times for your date on the morning of your visit, and plan to arrive well clear of them.

What is the best time to visit Chora Church?

Right at the start of tourist hours. The rooms are small and fill quickly, and the first part of the morning has no prayer pause. Mid-afternoon between two prayers is the next best choice.

Is Chora Church open now after the restoration?

Yes. It reopened on 6 May 2024 after a four-year restoration and has been open to visitors since, 09:00–18:00 on Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

How long should I allow for a visit?

About 60 minutes inside is typical. Add a margin for the security check and for a possible wait if a prayer pause falls during your visit.
