Why a guide helps at Chora

Chora is small. You can walk through it in ten minutes and miss most of what it says.

The decoration was planned as one programme. Theodore Metochites restored the church between 1316 and 1321 (source). The scenes he commissioned are arranged as cycles. Each cycle starts in one bay and continues across vaults, lunettes and domes (source). If you enter and turn the wrong way, you read the story backwards.

There is a second difficulty. The life of the Virgin in the inner narthex follows the Protoevangelium, an early text outside the Bible (source). Many scenes are unfamiliar even to visitors who know the Gospels well. The inscriptions are in Greek.

A guide solves both problems. You get the order, the names and the reasons. You also get help with the practical side of a working mosque, where tourist entry pauses for prayer.

What a guided visit typically covers

Most guided visits follow the building from the outside in. The route below is the usual order. Your guide may change it around prayer times.

Outer narthex: the infancy and ministry of Christ

You start in the outer narthex. The lunettes carry the infancy of Christ. The vaults above show his ministry and miracles (source). A guide points out where the sequence begins and how it wraps around the corners.

Inner narthex: the life of the Virgin

The inner narthex holds the life of the Virgin, told scene by scene. Two domes rise above it. One shows Christ Pantokrator, the other the Virgin, each ringed by Old Testament ancestors (source).

Here you also meet the earlier patrons. A large Deesis mosaic includes Isaac Komnenos, who renovated the church in the 12th century, and a nun named Melanie (source). This is a good place to hear the history of the building.

The nave

The nave is the prayer hall today. Three mosaic panels survive here: Christ and the Virgin on either side of the apse, and the Dormition of the Virgin (source). The mosaics in the prayer section are covered with curtains (source). Your guide will explain what is there and what you can see on the day.

The parekklesion: Anastasis and Last Judgment

The side chapel is painted, not set in mosaic. Saints stand along the walls. The eastern bay holds the Last Judgment. In the apse is the Anastasis, Christ pulling Adam and Eve from their tombs (source). Guides usually end here, and give you time to look.

For every work by name, see our list of the mosaics and frescoes.

What is and is not fixed

We do not print tour details that can change. What we sell online today is entry with an audio guide; see tickets for what it includes.

Some things are fixed by the building.

The official operator also sells an audio commentary at the ticket booth, in nine languages (source). It suits you if you want to go at your own pace. A live guide suits you if you want to ask questions.

Pairing Chora with a Byzantine Istanbul tour

Chora stands in Edirnekapı, Fatih, Istanbul, in the north-west corner of the old city. Three other Byzantine sites are close. Together they make a half-day that Sultanahmet cannot offer.

The Theodosian Walls

The land walls were built under Theodosius II, with a first phase finished around 413. They form a triple line: an inner wall, an outer wall and a moat (source). Chora is near the Charisios Gate, now Edirnekapı (source). Mehmed II entered the city through this gate in 1453 (source).

Tekfur Palace

Tekfur Palace, the Palace of the Porphyrogenitus, was built in the 13th century beside the land walls, between Edirnekapı and Ayvansaray. The city's museums directorate describes it as the only Byzantine palace in Istanbul to survive with its architecture intact. It is now a museum (source).

Fethiye (Pammakaristos)

The Pammakaristos church lies south-east of Chora, in Çarşamba. Around 1310 a side chapel was added in memory of the general Michael Glabas Tarchaneiotes, and parts of its mosaics survive. The church served as the seat of the Patriarchate from about 1455 to 1587, then became Fethiye Mosque (source). It is the closest comparison to Chora in date and style. Check that it is open before you go.

Who a guided visit suits

A live guide is worth arranging if this is your first Byzantine church with its decoration in place. It also suits you if you are travelling with someone who wants the stories and not only the gold. If you already know the cycles, or you prefer silence, the audio guide and our room-by-room list will serve you well.

Before you book

Check the opening hours for your date. Read how to get there, because Chora is away from the tram line most visitors use. If you are deciding between this and the city's great cathedral, see Chora Church vs Hagia Sophia.

Frequently asked questions

Is Chora Church worth visiting?

Yes. It holds a near-complete 14th-century programme of mosaics and frescoes, shown at close range. Allow about 60 minutes inside. A guide makes the visit richer because the images follow a set order.

Is Kariye Mosque worth visiting?

Kariye Mosque is the same building as Chora Church, so yes. Plan around prayer times. Fridays: worship only, no tourist visits.

Is Chora Church now a mosque?

Yes. It has been a mosque again since 2020 and reopened in May 2024. Visitors are welcome outside prayer times, and guided visits work around the prayer schedule.

Do you need a guide for Chora Church?

No, you can visit on your own with a standard entry ticket. A guide helps because the scenes are arranged as cycles with a reading order, and the labels are in Greek. An audio guide is a middle option.

How much does a tour guide cost in Istanbul?

It depends on the tour, the language and whether the visit is shared or private. We do not quote a figure here. We do not sell a live-guide visit online yet; our online ticket is entry with an audio guide.

What is the Chora Church guided tour price?

We do not sell a live-guide tour online yet, so there is no price to quote. Our online ticket is entry with an audio guide. For reference, the official gate price for entry alone is €20 for foreign visitors.

What is the entrance fee for Kariye Mosque?

The official gate price is €20 for foreign visitors. Turkish citizens: free. Worshippers: free. The Museum Pass is not valid.

How long is the Chora Church guided tour?

It depends on the guide and the group. As a reference, a self-guided visit typically takes about 60 minutes.

What are the Chora Church opening hours for guided visits?

Guided visits run within the visitor hours: 09:00–18:00, last entry 17:55. Fridays: worship only, no tourist visits. Tourist entry stops about 15–30 minutes before each prayer time and resumes after prayers.

What is the best tour in Istanbul?

It depends on what you want to see. If Byzantine art is your interest, a guided visit to Chora with the land walls is the most focused choice. For a first overview, an old city tour of Sultanahmet covers more ground.

What does a Byzantine Istanbul tour itinerary include?

Around Chora, the usual stops are the Theodosian land walls at Edirnekapı, Tekfur Palace and the Pammakaristos church. Routes differ from guide to guide.

What is the Palace of the Porphyrogenitus?

It is the Byzantine palace known in Turkish as Tekfur Sarayı, built in the 13th century beside the land walls. It stands a short distance north of Chora and is now a museum.

Can I wear jeans to the mosque?

The rule at Chora is: Shoulders and legs covered; headscarf for women inside the prayer hall. Long trousers meet the requirement for covered legs.

What does the name Chora mean?

Chora means land or countryside in Greek. The monastery first stood outside the walls of Constantine, and the name stayed after the city grew around it.
